What is on the sheet, and what is not

The blank hundred square is the ruling without the numbers. It is the same frame as the numbered sheet, ten columns wide and ten rows deep, one hundred cells inside twenty-two ruled lines, and it carries no printed numerals whatever. Not a hundred of them, not ten, not one. The count of numerals in the file is zero, and no type size is set on the sheet, because there is no type on it to set.

That is worth stating plainly, because blank does not mean the same thing on every table this press sets. The blank multiplication chart keeps its headers: the row of factors along the top and the column of factors down the side are still printed, twenty-four numerals in all, and only the products inside the grid are left out. A hundred square has no headers to keep. Its numbers are not labels standing around the edge of a working area; they are the content itself, one to a cell. Take them away and nothing printed remains but the grid.

Taking it

PDF, PNG or SVG, drawn in your browser when you ask and sent nowhere. Blank is a setting like any other here, so you can put the hundred numerals back, change the range, swap the paper, turn the sheet on its side, or shade cells before you take the file.

An empty grid is not committed to anything

Because nothing is printed inside it, the sheet does not say what it is a hundred square of. Ten by ten with no numerals is simply one hundred cells in order, and the order is whatever is written into them: 1 to 100 in the ordinary reading direction, or 101 to 200, or the tens, or a handful of entries with the rest left alone. The ruling fixes the shape and only the shape.

The shape does return the moment anything is filled in left to right and top to bottom, because ten to a row is what makes the columns behave. A step right adds one, a step down adds ten, and a column becomes a run of tens whose members all end in the same digit. That property belongs to the width of the grid rather than to the ink, which is why it survives the numerals being removed and comes back with them.

Set the two sheets side by side and the difference is exact and countable. Both are ten columns by ten rows. Both are twenty-two ruled lines. One carries a hundred numerals and the other carries none, and that is the entire distance between them.
