What this sheet holds

The hundred square sets the whole numbers from 1 to 100, one to a cell, in a grid ten columns wide and ten rows deep. That is one hundred numerals on a single A4 sheet, set at fifteen point, inside twenty-two ruled lines: eleven running down the sheet and eleven running across it, edges counted.

The width of the row is the whole of the design. Because a row holds ten cells and the numbers run left to right, a step of one cell to the right adds one, and a step of one cell down adds ten. Every column is therefore a run of tens, and every number standing in one column ends in the same digit. The fourth column reads 4, 14, 24 and on down to 94. The last column is the ten times table, 10 at the head and 100 at the foot. The first column carries the numbers ending in 1, from 1 down to 91.

Rows of ones, columns of tens

Almost none of this is printed on the sheet, and it is the part worth knowing. Read across and the hundred square is a plain list. Read down and it is the tens. The two readings sit at right angles, so the same hundred numbers are laid out twice at once: a row is a run of ones, a column is a run of tens, and where a cell sits says as much as the numeral inside it.

The diagonals follow from that without any further rule. One cell right adds one and one cell down adds ten, so one cell down and to the right adds eleven; the leading diagonal reads 1, 12, 23, 34, 45, 56, 67, 78, 89, 100, corner to corner. Going down and to the left takes one away and adds ten, so that diagonal steps by nine each time.

The edges are worth naming too. The top row is 1 to 10 and the bottom row is 91 to 100. The right-hand edge carries the multiples of ten and nothing else. The left-hand edge carries 1, 11, 21 and so on, each of them after the first being one more than the number that closed the row above. And 100 stands alone in the bottom right corner, the only three-digit numeral anywhere on the sheet.
