Why this one is ten sheets

A thousand numbers set ten to a row is one hundred rows. One hundred rows do not go on one A4 sheet at a size anyone can read, so this chart is printed as ten sheets and the file carries every one of them: 1 to 100, 101 to 200, and so on in hundreds to 901 to 1000.

Each sheet is ten columns wide and ten rows deep, ruled with twenty-two lines, eleven down and eleven across, with its hundred numerals at fifteen point. That is a hundred square’s frame, repeated ten times over. Set all one hundred rows on a single sheet instead and the numerals would have to come down to about 3.56 points, which is the reason this press does not offer it that way.

One grid printed in ten pieces

The breaks fall at every hundred, which is the end of a row, so no sheet starts partway through anything and the ten pieces are a single grid cut along its own ruling. A step of one cell to the right adds one and a step of one cell down adds ten, on every sheet and across every join. The left-hand column reads 1, 11, 21 and onward, sheet after sheet, to 991, and all one hundred of those numbers end in 1. The right-hand column is the ten times table run out to 1000.

The numerals grow as you go, and the counts are lopsided. Nine of the thousand are single digits, and all nine are in the first row of the first sheet. Ninety have two digits, and they fill the whole of the rest of that first sheet bar its final cell. Nine hundred have three: that final cell, then every cell of the eight sheets after it, then all but the last cell of the tenth. And exactly one numeral in the whole thousand has four digits: 1000 itself, in the last cell of the last sheet, in the bottom right corner.

So the ten sheets are not ten variations. They are one chart a hundred rows deep, and the only reason it arrives in pieces is that the numerals are set large enough to read.
