What this table holds

Ten rows, ten columns, 100 products. The smallest is 1 and the largest is 100, which sits in the far corner and is ten tens. With the two header strips counted, 120 numerals are set at fifteen point inside 24 ruled lines, on one sheet of A4. There are 42 distinct answers among the 100 cells, the rest being repeats: the grid is symmetrical about its diagonal, so each product off that line is printed once on either side of it.

It is the roomiest of the multiplication charts here. Twenty-four ruled lines is the fewest any of them uses, and fifteen point is the largest type the press sets on a chart of this kind, so there is more white space around each numeral on this sheet than on any other in the set.

What 1 to 100 asks for

That phrase carries two readings, and it is better to say so than to pick one quietly. It can mean a chart whose products run up to a hundred. That is the grid on this page: the headers stop at ten, ten tens is a hundred, and a hundred is the largest number printed anywhere on the sheet. Or it can mean a chart whose headers themselves run to a hundred, which is a different object entirely, a hundred rows by a hundred columns, with ten thousand products in it and its two header strips besides.

The second is not a sheet of paper. For scale, the largest multiplication chart this press will set runs to thirty; its 900 products and 960 numerals are already down at 7.48 point on A4, which is the smallest type it is willing to print. A hundred by a hundred is far past that in both directions, so there is no page for it here and no setting that will produce one.

This page therefore serves the first reading, which is the one the press can put on a sheet of paper at fifteen point. If you did want the headers to go further than ten, the range is a control on this page, and the chart will be redrawn to any size the press will still set legibly.
