What this table holds

400 products in a twenty by twenty grid. The smallest is 1 and the largest is 400, twenty twenties, in the far corner. With the header strips counted the sheet carries 440 numerals, set at 11.05 point inside 44 ruled lines, on one sheet of A4.

Of the 400 products, 152 are distinct. The remainder are the mirror image of those, since a times b and b times a fall in different cells and hold the same number, and the grid is symmetrical about the line that runs from the first cell to the last.

Taking it

PDF, PNG or SVG. The range, the paper, the orientation and the blank cells are all settings here, and the table is recomputed in the browser each time one of them moves. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

What the extra rows cost

The sheet did not get any bigger. That is the fact the range control quietly hides, and it belongs in front of the file rather than behind it. A chart to twelve puts 144 products on A4 and sets them at fifteen point, inside 28 ruled lines. This one puts 400 on the same paper. To do that the press rules 44 lines instead of 28 and drops the numerals to 11.05 point, which is about three quarters of the height they had. Nearly three times the products, in smaller type, on an identical sheet.

The step is also uneven, which is worth knowing if twenty is not fixed for you. Going from twelve to fifteen costs half a point: the chart to fifteen sets its numerals at 14.5. Going from fifteen to twenty costs three and a half more. Most of the price of this sheet is paid in that second step, not spread evenly across the range.

So a bigger chart is not simply a better chart. It is the same piece of paper carrying more, and everything printed on it is smaller as a consequence. The press will go further than this and does, with a chart to thirty at 7.48 point, and that is where it stops rather than set anything smaller.
